How To

How do I begin base jumping?

Base jumping (also called free-fall Parachuting) allows participants to jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), including bridges, towers and buildings, with no equipment attached. To land safely, the participant must jump off the object. It is similar in nature to skydiving. You don't need a parachute and you don’t need to hold your breath until it opens.

The most common type is a wingsuit jumping suit. A wingsuit is two pieces of fabric joined together. The chest, arms and legs are covered by one piece and the legs by the other. Special boots allow the jumper to stand straight during flight. During descent, the jumper pulls the straps attached to his/her feet tight, which causes the material covering the legs to bunch up, creating a large pocket of air underneath the jumper's body. When the air pocket grows large enough, jumpers can open their parachute to land safely.

To propel themselves higher in the air, some base jumpers use powered suits. The two main components to powered suits are a backpack filled with batteries and a undercloth that houses a jetpack. These packs contain small rockets that shoot jets of hot gas at high speeds. This creates thrust and propels the jumper ahead. However, these suits can be heavy and loud.

Some people who want to try out BASE jumping don't know what they're getting into. Learn how to BASE Jump. Be aware of the risks. There are many ways that you can die from this activity, including falling off a rock, colliding with another person, or hitting an obstacle head on or upside down. Although BASE jumping can be dangerous in some cases, it can also prove to be extremely dangerous if done wrong. Be sure to follow the safety tips below before you attempt to BASE Jump.

Practice safe BASE jumping techniques starting on a small hill. You should always take a few minutes to get comfortable with the terrain before jumping off a larger one. Pay attention to weather conditions. Try to jump when the wind isn't blowing in your face. Also, avoid foggy skies. If you see more than 10 feet ahead of yourself, then you might need wait until the cloud clears. Third, make sure you have the right gear. You should have a helmet, goggles and gloves as well as a complete suit including a harness. Fourth, make sure you have a plan. In case something goes wrong, you should ask another person to come along with you. Never, ever jump alone. Always have another person watching over your back.
